I will be the first to admit that we are not an academic group. And that we're not a group focused on politics. But I think this sentence out of the 2009 Budget is important, and that you should read it. “Scholarships granted by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council will be focused on business-related degrees”. This funding has previously been distributed equally among Masters and Doctorate students across the various faculties, but Harper just had them cut our funding. There's a petition here: http://nikiashton.ndp.ca/sshrc with more details. Please, read it, and make your decision. But I really wonder how you can stimulate an economy when you're taking funding away from people who would go on to earn, and spend, a lot of money with that one extra degree, that they can only afford with a SSHRC. My apologies to anyone who feels that this is irrelevant to the society. I know that a number of our members are Arts students, and this is, in my opinion, important. ~Genevieve, Society President P.S. - the regular showing e-mail will be sent out in a few days.
