Hello all, Well, once again it's time for more anime! We have our next showing this Friday at 7:30 in A-1046 (as always, this may be subject to change). We're being artsy next meeting so we're showing: Grave of the Fireflies On the final days of World War II, 14-year-old Seita and his four-year-old sister Setsuko are orphaned after their mother is killed during an air-raid by American forces in Kobe, Japan. After having a falling-out with their aunt, they move into an abandoned bomb shelter. With no surviving relatives and their emergency funds and rations depleted, Seita and Setsuko must struggle to survive their hardships as well as those of their country, which is on the losing end of the war. Animax Taisho Trio The Animax Taisho (Award) is an annual competition held by the Japanese anime satellite network Animax. Participants all over Asia are asked to hand in a script for half-hour anime. The script that wins the competition then actually goes into production and is aired on the Animax network. We're screening three of these. Hotori ~ Tada Saiwai wo Koinegau (Hotori ~ I Only Want Happiness) (Winner 2004): At the Personality Plant, robots are being built and slowly outfitted with the artificial memories of real people. Suzu is one such robot, being made to replace the young boy a family has lost. By chance, he meets a Hitori, a young girl suffering from progressive memory loss. The two children become friends and attempt to define themselves in the light of their changing memories. Yumedamaya Kidan (The Strange Story of a Dream Sphere Dealer) (Winner 2006): Fifth grader Naho has been both mama and sister to her baby brother, Jun. After making plans to meet with her friends on her birthday, her father tells her that he has to go out for the day and that she needs to stay home with her brother, but he says that a Helper-san (babysitter) should be coming later. The Helper-san turns out to be a Dream sphere Dealer who offers Naho her choice of three very different dreams, and each one could change her life completely ... Azusa, Otetsudai Shimasu! (Azusa Will Help!) (Winner 2003): In a future where robots are already commonplace in society, the Karugamo High School team needs one more member to have the required nine players. To fill in, they resort to acquiring a robot. Not having much to spend, they can't afford to buy a sports robot. Instead, they purchase Azusa, a robot maid. Hope to see you all there (and if I were you, I would bring a jumbo box of Kleenex because it's going to be a tearjerker. ~Rowena
